Project GR86:
Blitz Carbon Cold Air Intake Installation

Let's go into a bit more details of the installation and result of the cold air intake on the GR86.

Blitz Carbon Power Intake in GR86 ZN8

So all in all, the removal of the old air box and assembly/installation of the Blitz Carbon Cold Air Intake took about 2 hours in total.  I think my time would cut in half if I was to do it again though.  This was a very simple novice type of DIY that most people can handle, without having to deal with any fluids or tricky removal or installation.

The Parts

Here's the list of components that I got from Black Hawk Japan.

  1. Blitz Carbon Power Intake Kit for Toyota GR86 ZN8 Subaru BRZ ZD8 FA24 35275

  2. Blitz Suction Kit Red for Toyota GR86 ZN8 Subaru BRZ ZD8 55101

Overall including shipping, I think these guys still have a better deal than what I can find locally in Canada, and I have ordered from them before so it was a no-brainer.

The Installation

I think a video is better than any written description.  Please check out my video on my YouTube channel below for the entire installation process.

The Result

Without going on a dyno or direct comparison on timed runs, I do not have anything quantitative to show for regarding the difference.  However, from a qualitative feel perspective, I can definitely feel more rapid throttle response especially at lower RPM (ie. 3000RPM or so); there is more pull to the car not even at full throttle.

Sound-wise, it's night and day.  I would not be able to hear the air intake with the stock intake filter/box; but now with this Blitz Carbon Power Intake, the intake sound is just as audible as the HKS Legamax Premium exhaust!  Now whether this is your preference or not, it would be different for everyone.  On throttle, I can hear the air rushing in, while on release of the throttle, it makes this whooshing sound that almost sounds like a blow-off-valve.  I know the car is NA, but that's how I would describe the sound.

I think it's also important to note that the loud air intake sound only comes at higher level of throttle.  When I'm driving with light throttle around my neighborhood at night, the audible sound level is significantly lowered, which is a big plus.  Afterwall, I don't want all my neighbors to know I'm coming home late:)
