Pure Racing: Taming the VITA-01 at Kota Circuit

There is a fundamental difference between a fast street car and a purpose-built race car. On January 8, 2026, I had the opportunity to pilot a VITA-01—a closed-wheel, open-cockpit racer—facilitated by the team at Circuit Orange Racing [00:20].
The Machine: VITA-01 Specs
Before hitting the asphalt, it’s important to understand what makes this car so special. Manufactured by West Racing Cars Japan, the VITA-01 is a featherweight monster [00:06]:
Engine: 1.5L Toyota 1NZ-FE engine.
Power: ~110 hp.
Weight: 600–615 kg.
Transmission: 5-speed manual.
While 110 hp might sound modest, when it only has to move 600 kg, the power-to-weight ratio transforms it into a surgical tool on the track.
The Ritual: Pre-Flight Checks
Driving a VITA-01 isn't as simple as turning a key. It requires a full ritual—donning the racing suit and helmet [00:48], snapping the removable steering wheel into place [01:28], and securing the multi-point harness [01:06]. Once you are strapped into that tight cockpit, you become a part of the machine. There are no creature comforts here—just you, the pedals, and the shifter [01:21].
The Drive: Finding the Flow
Kota Circuit (幸田サーキット) is the perfect venue for a car like this [00:31]. It’s a technical track that rewards precision over brute force.
The Warm-up: I spent the first few laps finding the rhythm, feeling out the grip of the tires and the bite of the brakes [02:07].
The Hot Lap: Once the tires were up to temperature, the VITA-01 truly came alive. The communication through the steering wheel is instantaneous. Every apex clipped and every gear shift felt deliberate [02:40].
The Result: By the end of the session, I managed to clock a lap time of 50.10 seconds, a testament to the car's incredible balance and cornering speed.
Final Thoughts
This experience was a reminder that the soul of Japanese car culture isn't just about the "look"—it's about the performance. Chasing the apex at Kota Circuit in a purpose-built racer like the VITA-01 provides a level of clarity that stays with you long after the engine cools down.
