Real Tokyo Driving: Chasing the Sunrise on the C1 Inner Loop

There’s something undeniably magical about Tokyo before the city fully wakes up. The neon glow gives way to the early morning light, the relentless traffic of the metropolis hasn't yet materialized, and the expressways become a playground for those willing to set their alarms early enough.

For our latest Daikoku Legends feature, we took the Honda Integra Type R DC2 out for a 6:00 AM cruise on the legendary Shuto Expressway C1 Inner Loop. If you’ve ever dreamt of driving in Tokyo, the C1 is likely at the very top of your list. It’s a tight, technical, and iconic stretch of tarmac that weaves through the heart of the city, plunging through illuminated tunnels and winding between skyscrapers.

The Early Bird Gets the Empty Loop

We hit the road right around 6:00 AM. After a slight detour to find a non-ETC friendly toll booth—a quick reminder that I really wish this car came equipped with the electronic toll device—we merged onto the loop. From there, it was just pure, unfiltered driving.

The DC2 is absolutely in its element here. The raw, mechanical connection to the car, the precise steering, and the unmistakable sound of the engine bouncing off the tunnel walls create an experience that modern cars struggle to replicate. We ended up doing two full runs around the C1, soaking in the atmosphere as the sun crept higher over the Tokyo skyline.

This isn't a high-speed track attack; it’s a spirited cruise to appreciate the rhythm of the road and the mechanical symphony of the Integra.
