How to Visit Daikoku PA (and What to Do If It's Closed)

Daikoku PA is the most famous car spot in Japan, and it's the reason this channel has its name. It's also one of the most misunderstood. There's no ticket, no schedule and no guarantee anything is happening, and on busy nights the police can close the entrance. Here's what I've learned from filming there, so your visit doesn't end at a closed gate.
What Daikoku PA actually is
Daikoku PA is a rest area on the Shuto Expressway in Yokohama, inside the giant Daikoku Junction loop. It's a normal highway parking area with restrooms, food and a convenience store. It is not an event venue, and nobody organizes the meets. Cars simply show up, and the mix changes completely from night to night.
How to get there
The only way in or out is by car, on the expressway. There's no train station, no bus stop and no pedestrian entrance, and walking in from the surrounding roads is trespassing. Your options:
Drive yourself. Rent a car (you'll need an International Driving Permit) and enter from the Shuto Expressway.
Taxi. Use a licensed taxi and arrange the return trip in advance, because you can't hail one inside.
A guided tour. Choose a licensed, reputable operator. Some "JDM night tours" are not legal, so check before you book.
When to go
Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest, but also the most likely to be closed early.
Sunday mornings are calmer and great for photos. See what a Sunday morning looks like.
Weeknights are hit or miss. I tried a Monday night and it surprised me.
Tokyo Auto Salon weekend in January is on another level. Daikoku on TAS weekend.
Holiday periods like Golden Week, Obon and New Year also bring big crowds, which means a higher chance of an early closure.
Why it gets closed
When the lot fills up, or after revving, noise or other trouble, the police can close the entrance to new arrivals or ask everyone to leave. It isn't announced in advance. If you're told to leave, leave calmly. That's what keeps the spot open for everyone. This Friday night R34 takeover ended exactly like that.
What to do if Daikoku is closed
Umihotaru PA on the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line is the usual backup. Here's the midnight run I made when Daikoku shut.
Tatsumi PA near Odaiba sometimes has a smaller crowd.
Akihabara UDX on Saturday nights for itasha and anime cars. Akihabara UDX on the JDM Legends Map.
Super Autobacs Tokyo Bay Shinonome for parts shopping and the car park scene. A-PIT Autobacs Shinonome on the map.
Etiquette
No burnouts, rev battles or long idling near the buildings.
Park only in marked bays and keep the lanes clear for buses and trucks.
Ask before photographing people up close, and think twice before posting faces or plates.
Take your trash with you.
Follow staff and police instructions, every time.
Final thoughts
Go in with low expectations and a backup plan, and Daikoku will still surprise you. For the full spot guide with more videos, open the Daikoku PA page on the JDM Legends Map. Have you made it to Daikoku yet, or got caught by a closure? Let me know in the comments!
